How to Get Moisturized & Static-Free Hair This Winter

moisturized hair with Pantene Pro V

As pretty as the snow has been this week in New England, as we head into winter, it can bring on beauty blunders for many (myself included). Cracked and dry lips, dull hair, static, and peeling skin, just to name a few of the things we have to look forward to in the coming weeks :). Luckily, there’s solutions to many of these problems. Since I couldn’t possibly keep all of these tips to myself, keep reading for my best tips on how to keep your hair moisturized and free of static this winter. Your hair will thank you :).

USE A MOISTURIZING/REPAIRING SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER

My favorite shampoo and conditioner I’ve found as of lately (and it’s under $7 on Amazon for the duo… Can you say steal!) is PANTENE PRO-V’S REPAIR & PROTECT COLLECTION. It literally repairs your hair with each use, reduces tangles, and continues to repair and protect your hair as you sleep. My absolute favorite of the duo?! The Miracle Protecting Conditioner. It’s unlike any other conditioner I’ve tried from a drugstore. It’s thick in consistency, and has almost a whipped-feeling to it. I like to shampoo (only about three times a week, tops) and then follow with conditioner. While I’m doing other things in the shower, I put a shower cap on my head to lock in the conditioner for five minutes or so. This locks all of the nutrients and moisturizers into the hair follicle. Plus, it keeps the conditioner from rinsing out of your hair until you’re ready for it to. On the days I don’t shampoo, I still condition my hair when I shower, because this thick-haired girl would never get the tangles out otherwise. Before using this line, I would have to comb out my hair after putting conditioner in it, and then comb out again after rinsing it out, right before I got out of the shower. That’s how tangled my hair can get. Since using this line, I only have to comb my hair at the end of my shower (like most normal people do)! Can you say time saver?! But seriously, this is one of the first shampoos that hasn’t turned my hair into a tangled tumbleweed after rinsing it out.

USE A DIFFUSER

Know the attachment that normally comes with your hair dryer? It’s not just a crazy-looking tool meant to stay buried at the bottom of your bathroom drawer. Diffusers are designed to spread the air flow over a larger area, therefore, cuts down on frizz when drying. They’re often used for curly hair, but those with wavy hair can also benefit from using. When I use a diffuser, I notice that my hair is much smoother, and less frizzy. Too things that make myself and my hair very happy.

STATIC GUARD ISN’T JUST FOR YOUR CLOTHES

Meet the reason I loathed wearing winter hats all through childhood. STATIC ELECTRICITY. If you knew me growing up, then you know that I had hair practically down to my bum for a good portion of my childhood. Do you know what it’s like to have incredibly thick and long hair, and then combine that with the dry air that causes your hair to stand up and fly everywhere?! Hopefully not, but if you do, meet Static Guard. It’s formulated to use on clothes, but I like to spritz a little into a hair brush, and then brush through hair, to combat frizz and static electricity.

If Static Guard isn’t your thing, try a spritz of hair spray. I hate having crunchy hair more than anything. You too? Meet PANTENE PRO-V AIRPSRAY FLEXIBLE HOLD HAIRSPRAY. There’s zero alcohol in this formula, meaning your hair stays hydrated and less sticky. Think bouncy, less frizzy hair, without being weighed down like a traditional hair spray usually does.

USE DRYER SHEETS

So at this point, I think we all know the trick with rubbing a dryer sheet on your hair to reduce static. Does it work? Absolutely. Do I always want to smell like how I imagine the Snuggles teddy bear in a pile of laundry smells… No, but that’s the price you pay for good hair. Another trick, rub a dryer sheet on your pillow before bed!

ONE TO TWO HAIR MASKS A WEEK

I can’t explain how important this step is to moisturized hair. Masks smooth and hydrate your hair and are essential during the winter time if you want hydrated, smooth hair. I like to do one mid week, and also on Sunday morning or night as a way to prepare for the week ahead. Plus, having good hair on a Monday just makes life better :).

AVOID USING A PLASTIC COMB

Without getting too much into a science lesson, basically, when the temperature lowers and the air is dry, electrons that are negatively charged, fly out of you hair, leaving your mane with positive charges that resist each other. Opt for a metal comb. It acts as a conductor.

I’m ashamed to admit that I knew none of the ways to fight static. I just suffered in my ignorance. My hair is also very long and thick and I am so excited to try all these tricks (even the dryer sheets!)
